Oregon National Register and Survey Program
James Grant Watts House, Columbia County
Oregon's National Register and Survey program is part of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), which is located within the Heritage Programs division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Through the Oregon Survey Program the office assists property owners, governments, and interested citizens in identifying and listing Oregon's most historically important resources in the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register is maintained by the National Park Service in Washington D.C. and is the nation's official list of buildings, structures, districts, sites and objects significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, and culture.

HOW DO I ...?
New Survey Guidelines
In January 2008 the office launched a new survey program designed to efficiently and accurately identify individual properties and potential districts that are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The system, based on Microsoft Access, allows surveyors to build on the scholarship of previous professionals and append digital images and maps to the office's growing database of historic properties. Training sessions for the new program will be held bi-monthly as long as the sessions can be filled. The survey system is more fully described in the guidebook entitled "Guidelines for Conducting Historic Resource Surveys in Oregon," which can be downloaded below as an Adobe PDF.
